Bronze Ware - Khan Long Hin

Our bronze-ware bowls have a rich history that traces their origins to the artistic flourishing that occurred in the city of Ayutthaya between the 14th and 18th centuries. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya grew to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the time, becoming a center of global diplomacy and commerce. After the city was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, many of Ayutthaya's surviving inhabitants relocated to the Chao Phraya River delta, an area that would develop into the contemporary metropolis of Bangkok.

Among the displaced were the artisans of the Baan Bu community, who settled in what is now known as the Noi district of Bangkok. They brought with them the metalworking expertise honed in Ayutthaya and have continued the tradition of creating exquisite stone-polished bronze bowls to this day. The bowls they create have long been cherished as prized ornaments and functional utensils used for special occasions and for making ceremonial offerings to Buddhist monks.

 

Known as Khan Long Hin, the bronze bowls crafted by the Baan Bu community are widely regarded as the finest examples of Thai bronze artistry. In recognition of this enduring cultural legacy, the Thai government formally designated the work of the Baan Bu community as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2015. However, despite ongoing domestic and international demand, the number of skilled artisans with the patience, expertise, and discipline to produce these beautiful bronze bowls is dwindling, making them increasingly rare. We are very happy to work with the remaining artisans and are proud to offer an exquisite, albeit vanishing, aspect of Thailand's rich cultural heritage as part of the Colour Space collection.
