Papayrus
Our handwoven placemats are crafted in the Thai province of Chanthaburi. This craft was initially brought to the region by Vietnamese nuns who settled there during the brief French colonial occupation at the end of the 19th century. The techniques they introduced continue to be practiced today.
The mats are created from papyrus or sedge reeds that thrive in the brackish waters of the area. These reeds are harvested, sun-dried, and dyed before being woven into mats using floor looms.
When we first encountered these mats, we were captivated by their beauty and the exceptional craftsmanship. Currently, around seven women are involved in weaving our mats, and we are delighted to collaborate with them and support this small, eco-friendly industry.
